School Council

Aims: Your school council is here to help YOU!

The new academic year brought with it the election of new School Councillors. Our School Council has adopted the guidelines set down in School Councils UK, a booklet supported by the Department for Education and Skills (Dfes). Here the children can post their ideas for school improvements or their concerns on any issue within the remit of the Council. The Council deals with these issues at their half termly meetings. This year the School Council has formulated a set of aims for the year, which it has published on the children's notice board:

So as well as being a channel for children's views being aired and acted upon, they have broadened their remit by undertaking fund raising activities - all credit to them!

End of term report

December 2010

In November we held a school Assembly to explain to the rest of the school about our aims for the coming year.

Our Aims

Blue Boat

It has been decided that the blue boat is looking rather tatty and the paint is peeling.  The committee have decided to raise money by holding a Spelling Bee.

A Spelling Bee is where the children dress up as letters, and bring a donation to enter the competition. Each child will be in their house colour team with a teacher to support each team. There will be two sets of words to spell aimed at the different abilities. Children will take it in turns to spell a word and a point given for the correct spelling.  The winning team will get a prize.

Toilets

Some of the younger children find the toilets a little scary so to help this we have decided to ask an artist to come to school to brighten up this area.  We have thought about different themes and have asked the school to put their ideas in the wallet on the school notice board.

Brown Boat

During the assembly we asked the school what they would like to happen to the brown boat as it has rotten.  They voted to have it mended.  This will be done in the new year.

Our school environment

Some members of the school had voiced concerns about children running on the plant areas and jumping on the blue boat.  During the assembly the school council reminded children to respect our school environment by using paths and not jumping not jumping on the front of the boat.

Our chosen charity

We have voted for and chosen the RSPCA for our charity this year.  We talked to the children about this and explained that we have written to the RSPCA in Hull and are awaiting a reply.

Yellow Woods Challenge

We are going to do this again.

School Council Report - 10 March 2010

Operation Smile

Operation Smile is an organisation which helps children from poorer countries who have a hair lip and cleft pallet.  The whole school brought in a t-shirt which would be made into an operating gown.  First we had to we thought about and drew three simple ideas which would cheer up the children.  Then we chose our favourite.  Next we cut up the back and put six wholes on for the ties.  The ribbon was donated by Boyes in Beverley.  Then we drew our designs onto the t-shirts now gowns using fabric pens. These were then parcelled up and sent off to Operation Smile.

School Hall Dinner Time Environment

The School Council felt that the dinner hall needed cheering up.  First we found some posters and put them up.  As we are a healthy school these poster are there to help rest of the school to make healthy choices.  Next we searched the web to find table cloths.  We found two designs and then asked the school to choose their favourite.  The favourite design, the jigsaw, has now been ordered.

Another issue was the pack up boxes on the table.  After discussion we decided to order some brightly coloured plates and jugs to go with the coloured cups.  These will be used as soon as the table cloths arrive.

Sports Relief 2010

We took an assembly to talk to the rest of the school about what sports relief does and how it helps children all over the world including Britain.

We are going to hold a sponsored 1 mile run around the school field.  We are going to organise this by measuring the field, having a drinks station and a stamp table to ensure that everyone completes the course.

Peter LevyIn 2007 the School Council contacted Peter Levy the presenter of Look North the news and events programme for our region.  The Council members all signed a letter of appeal for a boat to continue the grounds development on the theme of air water and earth.  The letter was featured on the tea time news programme on Thursday 9 November and we are waiting for the outcome of the appeal - we will keep you posted!

We were lucky to be offered two boats following our Look North appeal and more details are available together with pictures on the website under the heading "School History".
