At Lockington CE VC Primary School our mission is to “instil a love of lifelong learning and develop lively, enquiring minds in a happy, safe and caring environment, based on Christian values, which encourage all to show respect, acceptance and understanding of others.” We believe physical education has a role to play in helping us to fulfil this mission and we are committed to providing high quality activities for all of our pupils.
Our curriculum aims to engage and inspire and we have introduced a large number of sports into our curriculum. Lessons are taught by class teachers and external providers. Swimming sessions take place at Beverley Leisure Centre.
Our extra-curricular programme includes after-school clubs, lunchtime clubs, a leadership programme and inter and intra-school competitions and activities. Clubs are run by our dedicated teaching staff, by First Steps Sports and by external providers such as Hull City Tiger’s Trust. Our current programme includes Multi-sports, Football, Netball, Tag Rugby and Gymnastics. All but the Tiger’s Trust Football Club are provided free of charge*. Our clubs are popular and all pupils attend at least one club. Those not attending after-school clubs in Key Stage 2 are encouraged to find alternative ways to develop healthy lifestyles. We enter a variety of competitions with our school teams including ‘Sports Festivals’ and competitions organised by our local School Sports Partnership (www.thessp.org.uk) and by ‘The Riversiders’ small schools’ cluster.
We work with the community to help us develop our sports provision, with local sports clubs including Hull Stingrays, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and The Tigers’ Trust helping us to deliver sessions. We are always looking for ways to develop this side of our work. We also utilise the skills of our parents as volunteers who help to prepare our pupils for competitions and tournaments. Lunchtime supervisors are also trained to deliver activities to pupils and give them opportunities to develop their skills.
The Sports Leaders Programme is run for pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 to develop their leadership skills. This gives pupils the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding by helping others to do the same.
Pupils in Years 5 and 6 take part in ‘The Outdoor Team Challenge’ at Allerthorpe Lakeland Park, organised by the Local Authority, where outdoor and adventurous activities are devised to promote leadership and develop team work. Pupils in Key Stage 2 also have the opportunity to take part in residential visits with an outdoor and adventurous focus.
Our aim for the future is to ensure all pupils are living a healthy lifestyle, not only at school but in their home life too. It is important that we give our sports stars of the future their first opportunity here at Lockington CE VC Primary and in the local community. With this in mind, we use the Sports Premium to introduce a large number of sports into the curriculum and after school clubs.
Our school is a member of the School Sports Partnership, consisting of the Beverley cluster of primary and secondary schools. Through this provision we are fortunate to be able to attend a large number of sports festivals and competition and also receive a high level of training opportunities for our staff, carers and parents. We also have the opportunity to develop our teaching by working with PE teachers from the local secondary schools.
We are committed to high quality continual professional development for our staff to secure a sustainable improvement for the benefit of our children and their families. PE is very important when developing a healthy lifestyle and we use it to support all children in aiming for their highest potential.
