School Council

End of year report - July 2007

At the beginning of the school year we decided what our aims for the year would be, these were:

  • To help develop the school grounds by getting a boat for the water area
  • To replace and sort the wet playtime games
  • Raise money for the RSPCA through fundraising

Boat for the Water Area

As you are all aware we were very successful and acquired two boats. After writing to Peter Levy and gaining stardom on the television we were kindly donated two boats, one from Leconfield Army Transport and the other from Welton Sailing Club. Unfortunately due to bad weather conditions we have not been able to paint the boats but hopefully this will take place in early September.  Keep an eye open for a flyer as we will be looking for volunteers!

Wet Playtime Games

The games were sorted and we used the opportunity of the car boot sale to ask for donations.  We received around 10 new games - thanks to all those who donated.

RSPCA Week

The School Council decided to help the RSPCA by organising fundraising events.  This took place during a week of activities, selling buns and badges, competitions and finally a fancy dress competition which was kindly judged by the RSPCA representative. We raised a stunning £214.35.

We achieved all our set aims.

Children Voice Box

This is an important part of the School Council where the pupils of Lockington School can put ideas to be discussed and acted upon by the School Council.

Issues raised this year

  • Soap Dispensers

One had been broken.  Beth talked to Mrs Coyle and this was fixed immediately.

  • Request for more horror books for the library

This was discussed in detail and the Council decided to make a list of all the horror books.  There was found to be plenty of books around 96.

  • Milk for the whole school at lunch time

Beth talked to Mrs Coyle who informed her that milk was available to all pupils staying school dinners.

  • Dressing up for Christmas

A request was made for dressing up at the end of term.  Beth talked to Mrs Coyle who thought this was a

good idea. Plenty of tinsel and baubles were seen!

  • Netball Club

Beth discussed this with Mrs Coyle, a letter was sent out to parents and now there is a very successful netball club on a Monday after school.

  • Joint dinner/packup table

This is not practical as the dinners are seated nearer the hatch to enable safe delivery of lunches.

  • New Football Club

Football club runs on a Thursday night and is kindly run by member of Bishop Burton College.

  • Warhammer

There was a request for more Warhammer Clubs.  Warhammer already takes place once a week and it was felt that this was enough time.

  • Rota for Skipping

Beth discussed this with Mrs Coyle and more skipping ropes have been purchased to enable more pupils to use them during lunch.

  • School Pet

This was discussed and it was decided that it was a big responsibility to look after a pet and ensure that it was cared for during holidays.  There is also the issue of health and safety.

Healthy Schools

The School Council were concerned that there were a lot of unhealthy pack-ups in school and since the school lunches are now very healthy we wanted to improve pack-ups.

The Council held an assembly to make pupils aware of healthy food choices, made an interactive display and a food tasting session. This event was supported by Humdinger via Mr Gilbart and Stream Foods who kindly donated food samples.

We hope that you all feel that this years School Council have supported your Children's Voice ideas, achieved its aims and worked on your behalf to improve your school.

The new academic year brought with it the election of new School Councillors. Our School Council has adopted the guidelines set down in School Councils UK, a booklet supported by the Department for Education and Skills (Dfes). Last year's school council had been ably led by Madeleine Mason and now we have Beth Smart stepping into her shoes as Chairperson. We have no doubt that Beth will do a fine job. She is helped by Max Gilbart as Vice Chair and Gabrielle Doyle as Treasurer plus representatives of all year groups. The School Council has a post box in each classroom marked - "Children's Voice". Here the children can post their ideas for school improvements or their concerns on any issue within the remit of the Council. The Council deals with these issues at their half termly meetings. This year the School Council has formulated a set of aims for the year, which it has published on the children's notice board:

Aims

Your school council is here to help YOU!

This year your council is to help support the improvements to the school grounds by finding a boat for the water area.

We will be organising fund raising events so we can replace some of the broken wet playtime games.

During the school year we are going to be raising money for the RSPCA to help poorly and abused animals.

So as well as being a channel for children's views being aired and acted upon, they have broadened their remit by undertaking fund raising activities - all credit to them!

The School Council organised a Healthy Eating Assembly in the Summer Term 2007 where the whole school was encouraged to try new foods which could be incorporated within a healthy eating lunchbox.  Here are some pictures of the morning:

Peter Levy

In 2007 the School Council contacted Peter Levy the presenter of Look North the news and events programme for our region.  The Council members all signed a letter of appeal for a boat to continue the grounds development on the theme of air water and earth.  The letter was featured on the tea time news programme on Thursday 9 November and we are waiting for the outcome of the appeal - we will keep you posted!

We were lucky to be offered two boats following our Look North appeal and more details are available together with pictures on the website under the heading "School History".
